The Metropolitan Council is the regional planning organization for the seven-county Twin Cities area. The Council is involved with activities that include running the regional bus and rail systems, collecting and treating wastewater and coordinating regional water resources, among others. Additionally, it plans regional parks and administers funds that provide housing opportunities for low and moderate income individuals and families. The Council also provides a framework for decisions and implementation for regional systems including aviation, transportation and water management. The Metropolitan Council is appointed by the governor of Minnesota.
