The Upper Black River Council (UBRC) is a unique partnership of local, state, and national entities, conservation organizations, private landowners, and concerned citizens dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the Upper Black River watershed in Hillman, MI. Established in 1993, the UBRC focuses on managing the river system exclusively for brook trout, making it one of Michigan's finest brook trout fisheries. Through collaborative efforts with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) Fisheries Division, the UBRC has successfully completed numerous habitat improvement projects and educational outreach programs, ensuring the growth rates of brook trout in the Black River system remain among the highest in the state.
With the support of its partners, the UBRC has achieved significant milestones in its mission to protect and enhance the Upper Black River. From employing a part-time summer work crew to address stream restoration issues to engaging in road stream crossing projects and dam removal, the UBRC and its partners are committed to preserving the natural resources of the watershed. In 2011, the UBRC received official designation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit conservation organization, further solidifying its dedication to the long-term sustainability of the Upper Black River ecosystem.
