Founded in 1962, Oakland Schools is an autonomous, tax-supported public school district governed by Michigan General School Laws. Oakland Schools serves local school districts, public school academies and nonpublic schools in Oakland County. It serves more than 230,000 students through over 190 elementary schools, nearly 60 middle schools and about 50 high schools. Oakland Schools operates a department of special education that provides services to more than 25,000 students with disabilities in Oakland County. The school also provides assistance in development, distance learning, emerging technologies, summer programs, work-based learning, and counseling and guidance support for students and staff. Oakland Schools is located in Royal Oak, Mich.
