In addition to organizing fundraising to support research, MDA provides a summer camp for children, repair of durable medical devices and aids families in need by loaning power wheelchairs and assistive devices. Support groups are coordinated through MDAs Canton office. Two health coordinators help area families schedule care at major medical clinics in Detroit and Ohio.
The term muscular dystrophy encompasses 43 neuromuscular diseases, including ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
Fundraisers include an annual telethon hosted by celebrity Jerry Lewis and the annual Muscle Walk at Detroit's Ford Field in January.
