History
Centro Multicultural La Familia was founded in 1985 by Oakland County Community Mental Health (OCCMH) to provide the Hispanic community with quality mental health care in a culturally sensitive way. In 1992, Sonia Acosta, PhD, became El Centro's first full time supervisor. Then, El Centro had one full time clerical staff and two mental health clinicians. In 2000, Centro became part of Easter Seals. Seeing the growing need to provide services other than mental health to the Hispanic community, El Centro separated from its parent organization and formed Centro Multicultural La Familia, Inc. (CMLF) offering a broader array of services for the Spanish-speaking community. CMLF is a key player in the Latino community, advocating for services that address the unique needs of the community with Limited English Proficiency.
Specialties
Centro offers bilingual services in English and Spanish, including mental health counseling, client advocacy for victims of crime, life skills classes, health workshops and social services.
