From the wood paneling that surrounds shelves of paperback books to the folksy conversation between owner and customer, the atmosphere at Browns Family Bookstore is the equivalent of 1970s comfort food.
The freshly minted books you mind find include contemporary, historical and romance themes. Books can be special ordered, too. But there are mostly older paperbacks and they move out of the store quickly.
Every inch of space is maximized; there is barely room to walk. Browns has $3 and $4 cover prices for paperbacks that are cut to $1 or $2 for regulars who are returning books purchased earlier for a discount. Browns is owned by Glenn and Elia Elswick. The parking lot is busy, even at night, because the pizza store next door has a lot of traffic.
