History
The National Grange, formally known as the Patrons of Husbandry, was founded over 150 years ago by Oliver H. Kelley and six other employees from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Grange's purpose was to assist farmers whose livelihoods had been devastated by the Civil War. A fraternal order originally formed to promote farming and animal husbandry, the Grange's mission is to strengthen individuals, families and communities through grassroots action, service, education, advocacy, and agriculture awareness. Granges have always been open to non-farmers, have played a large role in providing community events, and were frequently used as a community meeting place for special events. Westport Grange No. 181 (the 181st Grange in Massachusetts) was founded on January 6, 1890 and has been quietly and steadily serving our community for years.
