Horse-drawn starting gates and assistant starters were the norm when Suffolk Downs opened its gates in 1935. The East Boston, Mass., track's history spans seven decades. It includes appearances by such equine superstars as Seabiscuit, Whirlaway and Cigar. Suffolk Downs' live meet runs from mid-spring to late fall. The meet's feature race is the $500,000 Massachusetts Handicap. The track is open seven days a week for simulcasting. Suffolk Downs offers various dining options that range from a hot dog to gourmet meal. They include The Terrace, which offers a spectacular view of the track and a TV monitor on each tiered table; Legends, a sports bar that serves lunch throughout the live racing program; Deli Grill, which serves pizza, hamburgers or sandwiches; the Turf Club, a private club that offers gourmet food in stately surroundings; and concessions, which offer popcorn, pizza, hot dogs and hamburgers.
