Established in 1974, the Stavros Center for Independent Living is a nonprofit organization that serves people with disabilities in the western Massachusetts area of Hampshire, Franklin and Hampden counties. Located in Springfield, Mass., the center is a part of Stavros, which is a social services organization that provides independent living and personal assistance services. Its personal assistance services include bathing, dressing, medications management and personal grooming aid. The organization also serves people with hearing impairments and provides them with specialized equipment, such as doorbell, telephone flashers, and video relay service equipment. Stavros offers the Massachusetts Equipment Distribution Program, which distributes free or low-cost telephones and related equipment for people who have difficulties in hearing, seeing and manipulating a standard telephone.
