Northampton Public Works Department provides repair, maintenance and improvement services to more than 30,000 citizens of Northampton, Mass. It operates on a 24 hour-basis with pagers and night staffs. Its board is a volunteer committee that helps to set and implement policy at the department. Its water division is a municipally owned and operated public water utility system that is regulated by federal and state drinking water laws. Its streets division maintains the city s streets, curbs, sidewalks, guardrails, trees, mosquito control, pedestrian crosswalks, parking and roadway centerlines, signs, park maintenance, street sweeping, vehicle maintenance, traffic signals and roadside vegetation maintenance control. It is also responsible for rapid response to all snow, ice and other inclement weather conditions, including flood control and public tree damage. Its wastewater treatment plant provides the city with primary and secondary water treatment.
