Laura Siersema is a composer and recording artist based in Greenfield, MA. Her latest project, Aberfan, is a contemporary world music composition that explores the tragic events of the Aberfan disaster in 1966, where a man-made mountain of coal waste collapsed on a primary school and nearby houses, resulting in the loss of 116 children and 28 adults. Through her music, Siersema aims to excavate the collective unconscious of our time and shed light on the destructive power of negligence and greed in our global systems.
Aberfan is a sponsored project of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), and donations made towards the project are tax-deductible. Siersema is seeking support for the experimental media design of an online presentation that combines her music with contemporaneous imagery, creating an immersive experience that unfolds with historical text, archival footage, and photographs. The project is funded in part by various foundations and continues to work towards the completion of its recording.
