Holland Ponds Recreational Area is a 200-acre park located in Shelby Township, Michigan. Named after former Shelby assessor Don Holland, the park features marshland, woods, and two large ponds, providing a habitat for a variety of wildlife including deer, fox, blue heron, rabbits, geese, ducks, turtles, frogs, and muskrat. The park is also home to the largest Great Blue Heron Rookery in Southeastern Michigan, making it a rare and delicate place.
The park has a rich history, with about 72 acres of the site previously being the former Swiss Valley park and the 35-acre former Green Glen park. These parks were popular in the early 20th century, offering picnic facilities, bars, music, dance pavilions, swimming, and fishing. However, due to contamination leakage from nearby landfill sites, the parks were closed to the public and later acquired by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Today, Holland Ponds Recreational Area is a preserved and cherished parkland, providing a beautiful natural space for future generations to enjoy.
