Founded in 2000 by local residents, Groundwork Somerville's mission is to educate youth about the environment. Through their healthy education, green jobs and sustainable community programs, this nonprofit supports farmers markets, national parks and urban schoolyard gardens.
Originally serving only younger children, the curriculum has expanded to include a high school jobs and internships initiative as well as a program for 18-28-year-olds. Every public Somerville elementary school has a school garden created via Groundwork programs. Recently the group also spearheaded a cleanup project of invasive water chestnuts along the Mystic River.
Executive director Jennifer Lawrence is always accepting new volunteers of all ages. Call or e-mail for more information.
