Grendel's Den - About Going Green! Grendel's is pleased to announce that our business is a Certified Green Restaurant Grendel's Den Story Grendel's Den opened in 1971 by Herbert and Sue Kuelzer. Their daughter Kari started running the restaurant in 2003. Grendel's is known as a "dyed-in-the-wool Harvard Square place" and is known to the Cambridge and Harvard University community as a comfortable, down-to-earth place to have food and drinks at fabulous prices. In 1982, Grendel's won an historic court case in the US Supreme Court, which enabled us to use our liquor license and changed existing laws in 9 states. Read the decision by clicking HERE. Grendel's Den prides itself on an hand-picked selection of imported and domestic beers from breweries large and small. You will find drinkable, flavorful local gems, far-flung discoveries, and customer favorites from classics like Guinness to 'cheap' stuff like 'Gansett. We take our food as seriously as we do our beer and make all of our menu items fresh from Grendel's own recipes. We are located in a basement hideaway on the cobbled walkways of Winthrop Street.
