History
Friends of the Unborn was founded by the late Marilyn Birnie of Hull and Quincy, who took one pregnant woman into her home to live with her two teenage daughters in September of 1984. Over the years Marilyn spoke and shared her vision with others of offering an option to women who wanted to carry and keep their child but felt they had no support. Since then, the private non-profit program has grown exponentially over time without any state or federal funding. After years of renting several homes and relying only on private donations, in 2001 a local philanthropist allowed the organization to consolidate by purchasing a large property in Quincy that can accommodate up to 14 residents, classroom, common space, conference rooms, offices, kitchen, and laundry. All within walking distance to public transportation, shopping, and medical facilities. The shelter is now celebrating its 35th year of serving pregnant and parenting women and their babies.
