This community center shares space with Agassiz Elementary School. Many of the programs are designed to coincide with subjects being taught at school. There was already a lot going on at the Agassiz Community Center, but as of August 2010 there will be even more. That's because with the (allegedly temporary) closing of the nearby Curtis Hall Community Center, several programs will be moved here. Curtis Hall's athletic programs, for instance, will move here. It is also adding a teen center as a result of the Curtis Hall closure. Jeannette Ayala is the friendly face of the Agassiz Community Center. "It's for JP families and the surrounding area to have a safe environment and teach skills so they can succeed in life," Ayala said. The center shares a gym and auditorium with the school. There are also two cafeterias (one quite small) that are often used for community meetings. There is a nominal membership fee that entitles one to use all of Jamaica Plain's community centers.
