Consecrated in 1859, the same year the town was established, Belmont Cemetery resembles historic Mount Auburn Cemetery, the nation's first garden-setting burial ground. The rolling contours of the land hold the remains of leading town founders and families in addition to those who lost their lives during the Civil War and World War II. The site is a popular location for strolling as it lies across from the Grove Street playground and Cambridge's Fresh Pond. New burial plots for traditional interments have not been available since 1988.
