In the early 1900's Russell and Earle Bates along with their father Gustave started quarrying granite along the Hingham Weymouth line. In 1920 the brothers incorporated as Bates Brothers Seam Face Granite Co. They operated multiple quarry holes in and amongst a large number of other quarry operators in the area, producing dimensional building stone and crushed aggregates. In 1953 Russell's daughter Mary and her husband Jim Bristol joined the family business and they continue to operate the business to this day. Along the way Jim acquired Bates Bros. neighbor, J. F. Price Co The Price family was producing sand, crushed stone, and aggregate directly adjacent to the Bates Bros. quarry. Bates Bros. and J. F. Price continue quarrying Weymouth granite for both dimensional building stone and crushed aggregate. We have expanded product lines to include materials for landscaping and excavation projects. Screened loam, bark mulch, decorative crushed stones, Unilock pavers and wall systems are just a few of the products now offered. As we move on to the next century, the next generation; Janet, Dave, and Jim Bristol have joined their parents and the companies have expanded to offer full service trucking and excavation services, recycling of asphalt, concrete, yard waste, and other earth products. In addition, we also offer as home construction under the company name of Weathervane Construction Co. and we recently completed the Weathervane Golf Club.
