The Massachusetts National Guard formed on December 13, 1636, when it was known as the Massachusetts Bay Colonial Militia. That date is considered the birth of the National Guard. This is the group of soldiers who began the Revolutionary War, firing the first shots at Lexington and Concord.
Driving down Main Street in Melrose, just past Pine Banks Park is where you'll find the National Guard Armory. You'll routinely find soldiers training at this location. In the back of the building, military vehicles are almost always in use. There's a monument in the front of the armory that's dedicated to the National Guardsmen who have served the country.
