Established in 1979, Independence House is a private, nonprofit organization that serves woman and children. It provides a range of services for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. The organization s services include crisis intervention, medical care, transportation, emergency shelter and support, court advocacy, transitional living, and community education and outreach. Independence House also offers short-term crisis counseling, and encourages women to participate in several support groups. The organization provides information and referrals through its hotline, support groups, advocacy services and bulletin boards.
