Established in 1994, Youth in Transition School addresses the physical, psychological, intellectual and social needs of children who are unable to participate in traditional school programs. It is certified by the Maryland State Department of Education and the District of Columbia Public Schools. The school serves more than 100 students between the ages of 11 and 21. Its curriculum includes language arts, math, science, social studies and health education. The school operates a nonpublic special education program for students suffering from autism, mental retardation and emotional disturbances. It also conducts classes in culinary arts, agriculture, horticulture, landscaping, greenhouse management, and building maintenance and construction. Youth in Transition School has an over 24,000-square-foot facility. The school offers individual, group and family therapies, as well as maintains a gymnasium, art room and media center. It is a part of the National Center on Institutions and Alternatives.
