Wright Theater in Baltimore, MD, was a vibrant performing arts series offered by Spotlight UBalt, a division of the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Baltimore. Over its eleven-year tenure, Spotlight UBalt presented a diverse range of events, including readings, theatrical productions, concerts, and integrated arts performances, with a focus on arts appreciation and increased reading comprehension. Unfortunately, due to budget restrictions, Spotlight UBalt concluded its operations after the final Emerging Voices Project in May 2018, leaving behind a legacy of over 200 events and more than 23,000 attendees.
Throughout its existence, Wright Theater showcased a variety of productions, including Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's musical "Assassins," William Butler Yeats' mysterious play "Purgatory," and a staged reading of the play "But I Said No" as part of Title IX Awareness programming. The arts, combined with education and social context, were used to promote empathy, compassion, and critical thinking among the audience. Wright Theater's contributions to the local arts scene will be remembered as a platform for artistic expression and a catalyst for engaging with complex realities.
