The Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen was founded as a United States trade union that represents railroad employees working in what was then the new craft of signaling in 1901. As railroads increasingly turned to the new technology of signal systems to improve the safety and efficiency of their operations, the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen expanded into a national organization that represents the men and women who install and maintain signal systems for most of the nation's railroads. It represents nearly 9,500 members that work for railroads throughout the United States and into Canada.
