The Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, also known as DHMH, consists of public and private hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, and hospice and home health care services providers. The department is responsible for protecting the community from tainted food and products and communicable diseases. It includes a vital records division that registers and indexes birth, death, marriage, divorce, adoption and legitimization data. In addition, the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene administers the Maryland Cigarette Restitution Fund Program. The department operates Joseph D. Brandenburg Center, which serves adults with developmental disabilities. The Department of Health & Mental Hygiene also maintains the Eastern Shore Hospital Center, which is a 75-plus-bed facility that provides a range of mental health care services. The department is administered by the State of Maryland.
