Though a young team, the Baltimore Ravens football franchise is steeped in both tradition and controversy. The club was formally established in 1996 as part of the National Football League s American Football Conference, but the history of professional football in Baltimore dates back to the Baltimore Colts organization, which relocated to Indianapolis in 1983. Thirteen years later Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell moved his team to Baltimore and renamed it in honor of famed poet Edgar Allen Poe, a native of the city. The Ravens have since compiled three winning seasons and won one Super Bowl in 2001. Popular Ravens players include Pro Bowlers Ray Lewis and Jamal Lewis. The team has headquarters in Owings Hill, Md., but plays its home games at the 70,000-venue M&T Bank Stadium in downtown Baltimore.
