The Lincoln County Historical Association (LCHA) is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the rich history of Lincoln County, Maine. Founded in 1954 by local artist Mildred Burrage, LCHA is committed to the stewardship of three historic buildings: the 1761 Pownalborough Court House in Dresden, the 1811 Old Jail in Wiscasset, and the 1754 Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta. These museums house a diverse collection of textiles, costumes, tools, furniture, photographs, and other artifacts that help tell the stories of Lincoln County's past.
With the help of knowledgeable docents, LCHA brings history to life by sharing real human stories of law and order, crimes and punishments, and the lives of residents as the towns of Lincoln County evolved into settled communities. Visitors can explore the Pownalborough Court House, which hosted notable figures such as John Adams and Benedict Arnold, or step into the 1811 Old Jail to gain insight into the criminal justice system of the past. The Chapman-Hall House, one of the oldest standing homes in Maine, offers a glimpse into the lives of its early inhabitants who lived under British rule before the Revolutionary War. LCHA relies on the support of the community to preserve these historic treasures for future generations.
