The Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-West (SLFPA-West) is one of two levee authorities serving metropolitan New Orleans, providing flood protection for the most populated areas on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Jefferson and Orleans Parishes through the construction, operation, and maintenance of flood control systems.
Comprised of the West Jefferson Levee District and the Algiers Levee District, SLFPA-West oversees approximately 47 miles of hurricane flood protection levees, floodwalls, and floodgates, as well as approximately 33 miles of Mississippi River levees and floodwalls. Governed by a seven-member board of commissioners appointed by the governor, the authority ensures the fulfillment of a board quota consisting of residents of Jefferson or Orleans Parishes and professionals in engineering and other relevant fields.
