History
The LKA Karate Club was founded in Metairie in 1961. In 1964, Sensei (Teacher) Takayuki Mikami arrived from Japan to lead the club and continues to today. Sent by the Japan Karate Association (JKA), the largest and most influential shotokan karate organization in the world, he had just graduated in the first class of JKA's rigorous Instructor Training Program. While in Tokyo, Sensei Mikami won the All-Japan Championships, still one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, in both forms and fighting. Under Sensei Mikami's instruction, the LKA quickly earned a reputation for strong training and good spirit as students consistently showed well in regional and national competition. Currently, 3 members are on the US National Team. Some are drawn to karate for the sport aspect (tournaments), others for the art (perfect technique, meditation) or self-defense. Either way, you, alongside fellow club members, can strengthen mind, body & spirit at the LKA. Come learn more!
