Midway Elementary Professional Development School, located in Shreveport, La., is a public institution that offers educational and extracurricular programs to students in grades kindergarten through five. The school has a student strength of more than 300 and in addition to the regular programs, it offers Buddy Reading, a bi-monthly program that pairs upper grade students and lower grade students to improve reading skills and abilities. It also offers Headsprout, a supplemental interactive computer program designed to help struggling readers. Its after-school tutoring program combines academic course work and enrichment activities for the students. The school uses accelerated reader to motivate students to read and to give teachers a way to monitor their reading practice.
