HistoryBurden Museum & Gardens began in the late 1800s as Windrush Plantation. The home and property were passed down through the generations to the three children of William Pike Burden Sr. and Ollie Steele Burden: Ione Easter Burden, William Pike Burden Jr. and Ollie Steele Burden. In 1966, love for their family and ancestral home inspired Ione Burden, Steele Burden and Jeannette Monroe, the surviving spouse of William Pike Burden Jr., to preserve Windrush by creating a place that would foster agricultural and horticultural research, provide a destination for generations to appreciate and learn about Louisiana's rich rural and cultural heritage and give people a place to experience the beauty of the natural world. LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens The LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens is an expansive collection of trees and trails, specialty gardens, woodlands, wetlands and arboreta that provides an educational experience for visitors of all ages. In all, the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens consists of five specialty gardens, multiple walking trails, a Black Swamp boardwalk and two event facilities. Windrush Gardens Majestic live oaks and ancient crape myrtles create a shady canopy over azaleas and camellias in Windrush Gardens, evoking a sense of tranquility and peace.
