Bar None By Design is a grassroots-minded nonprofit organization based in New Orleans, LA, dedicated to providing therapeutic healing, education, entrepreneurship, arts, homes, community-driven justice, and partnership to individuals of African descent who are currently or formerly incarcerated. Led by homegrown New Orleanians, Bar None offers a range of services and support, including an artist-in-residence program, and works tirelessly to advocate for the exoneration of August Williams, a former inmate who spent nearly 50 years in prison before being granted parole.
August Williams, also known as Gerttown, was wrongfully convicted at the age of 15 in the Jim Crow South and sentenced to death. Despite facing unimaginable challenges during his time on death row, Gerttown took his rehabilitation into his own hands, acquiring an education, earning faith-based certifications, and becoming a mentor to others. Since his release, Gerttown has become an ambassador for Bar None, sharing his story locally and nationally and continuing his fight for exoneration with the support of expert testimony and the community.
