History
In the early 70's Elliot and Sybil Gaspard purchased Arabi Food Store after moving from their Saint Maurice grocery located in the lower ninth ward. The Gaspard's provided groceries, fresh meats and other staples to the Arabi neighborhood. They quickly realized that the hard-working people of St. Bernard needed more than just cold cuts and bread. They began serving roast beef, hot sausage and ham po-boys from behind the counter. Local longshoremen and others found out about the little corner store and made it their regular stop. Not long after the Gaspard's opened a full service kitchen in the back of the store to keep up with the newly demanding orders. Today their daughter Deborah and her husband Mitch continue the tradition that Elliot and Sybil started 42 years ago. Because of all of their hard work and dedication to the local community, Arabi Food Store has cemented itself as a premiere food destination in St. Bernard Parish.
