HistoryTo combat the widespread false advertising of the time and highlighting the need for truth in advertising, the idea for the Better Business Bureau was born in Louisville at the fifth annual Associated Advertising Clubs of America (now the Ad Fed) convention at the original Galt House in 1909. The Louisville BBB, the 3rd in the country, was formed in 1916 and chartered by the national organization in 1918.SpecialtiesBBB is a registered 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing marketplace trust. BBB serves businesses and consumers in Louisville and Southern Indiana, South Central Kentucky, and Western Kentucky. BBB's vision is an ethical marketplace where buyers and sellers trust each other from Salem to Columbia and Shelbyville to Fulton County. BBB helps consumers in this area identify trustworthy (and less than trustworthy) businesses through almost 50,000 Business Profiles. BBB works to educate consumers about the latest scams, taking hundreds of calls a day at our office and going out into the community. BBB educates young people about finance and ethics, teaching financial literacy in area high schools and maintaining a storefront at Junior Achievement's BizTown. BBB sets and enforces standards for ethical businesses with over 4,200 Accredited Businesses in this area meeting and committing to these standards. BBB evaluates advertisements to ensure that people can trust what advertisers say. BBB evaluates local charities so donors know where their money is going. BBB coaches businesses on ethical behavior and how to build stronger, more trusting relationships with their customers and communities.
