The University of Louisville unveiled a life-size bronze statue of Lenny Lyles, a Louisville native and former track star and football player for U of L and the NFL Baltimore Colts, in a ceremony at Cardinal Park. The statue was created by artist Ed Hamilton, known for his notable works such as the Spirit of Freedom African-American Civil War Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Lyles, a four-year starter for the Cardinals, left a lasting legacy as one of the first African-American student-athletes at the university. He holds records for rushing yards and touchdowns, and his achievements earned him first-team Little All-America honors. The statue of Lyles adds to the enhancements of the Cardinal Park area on the Belknap Campus.
