Georgetown/ Scott County Emergency Management currently has a state of the art Emergency Operations Center, and Emergency Management headquarters, a 38' Command Post vehicle, three response vehicles, two response trailers, a rescue boat, a light tower and a volunteer staff of 50 ( highly trained in various aspects of emergency response, including a K-9 Search and Rescue team ) plus one full-time Captain/ Communications Officer and one full-time Director. We are part of a statewide comprehensive emergency management program for the Commonwealth, and through it an integrated emergency management system, to provide for adequate assessment, mitigation, preparation, response and recovery from the threats to public safety and the effects of destruction resulting from all major hazards. Some of these hazards include tornados, blizzard, ice storms, snow storms, flooding, earthquakes, hazardous materials, disaster or emergency occurrences that threaten life, property or the environment. We also respond to missing persons, routine reportable quantity hazardous material spills and to monitor severe weather. We are a coordinating agency for disaster and emergency response for an emergency, declared emergency, disaster or catastrophe. When a disaster occurs, the Emergency Operations Center ( EOC ) is activated. During this time we make continual updates to the community on the status of the emergency and the effects it has on the community. We are a public information center for the public and the media. We are a liaison with the National Guard, Federal ( FBI, EPA, FEMA, US Military, FAA, etc. ) & State ( State Police, Natural Resources, DLG, KCCRB, KVE, etc. ) agencies. We assist other response units. We get appropriate transportation for the community, such as doctors/nurses to hospitals and nursing homes, dialysis patients to their appointments, medication and groceries to the shut ins and many other ways of helping. After a disaster our agency works closely with FEMA doing damage assessment, helping gather dollar replacement to the city and county. Sometimes it takes years to complete a disaster incident after it has occurred. We work closely with the Red Cross, The Salvation Army and other volunteer agencies, during and after a disaster. On March 10, 2006 the Georgetown/ Scott County Office of Homeland Security ( OHS ) was established. This office works with all departments and agencies of the county to ensure a safer and more secure community. OHS is the liaison with the KY Office of Homeland Security and the US Office of Homeland Security for the county which includes all cities.
