History
South Central Mental Health Counseling Center opened its doors in 1962 to become one of the first community mental health centers in the state of Kansas. A few years later, when it was mandated that all counties in Kansas provide financial support for community mental health centers, SCMH provided the model for other centers to develop programs. Center staff gave presentations to various county commissions and opened its doors to officials and mental health professionals from around the state whom were interested in developing their own CMHC's. There are now 26 Community Mental Health Centers in Kansas. From the beginning we have been a leader in the development of social services in Butler County. SCMH was instrumental in bringing services for the MR/DD population to the county in 1962 and encouraged and nurtured the development of the Big Brothers (now Big Brothers/Big Sisters) of Butler County in 1965.
