Established in 1937, Kansas Highway Patrol is a full-service law enforcement agency that reduces the number and severity of traffic crashes through the enforcement of protection laws. Its traffic patrol division, using sobriety checkpoints, detains and arrests drivers suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The Kansas Highway Patrol employs a staff of more than 800 sworn officers. The agency also handles cases related to aggressive drivers, commercial vehicle regulations, concealed weapons and weapon transportation. In addition, it conducts seat belt use and child safety seat inspections. With a location in Topeka, Kan., the Kansas Highway Patrol enhances public relations through local community involvement in schools, civic organizations and businesses.
