Great Western Manufacturing is Kansas' oldest continually operating manufacturing firm. Founded in 1858, Great Western was established as a foundry that manufactured steam engines and repair parts for steamboats and wood-burning stoves. In the 1880s, the company acquired designs for a line of milling equipment and grew to become a milling engineering firm competing with companies such as Nordyke and Marmon and Allis Chalmers. After World War II, demand for new milling equipment in the United States virtually stopped causing many of the nation s milling equipment manufacturers to abandon the industry until the late 1960s. At this time, Great Western stopped manufacturing its line of milling equipment and focused its efforts into specializing in sifting and screening equipment. Great Western Manufacturing is located in Leavenworth, Kan.
