History
Red Door Fencing began as a small group of competitive-minded epee fencers practicing in a church basement in Des Moines, IA. In order to achieve our competitive goals, we knew we needed to open our own club so we could accommodate more athletes and provide a better, more productive experience for ourselves as fencers and coaches. We partnered up with a saber coach with similar interests and, after about a year of searching, found a suitable space to open our club - the basement of a 1940's warehouse-turned-auto-repair-shop in the historic East Village district. After about a month of clean up and set up, including the installation of rubber athletic flooring, we began practicing in our new space. In January 2014, we had our first open house and began accepting members from the general public. As of March 2015, we have discontinued the saber program due to lack of coach availability, but the epee program continues to grow.
