The Iowa City Fire Department provides progressive emergency and preventive services to the community. Its full-time firefighters specialize in fire, medical and technical rescues, as well as hazardous material emergency response services. The department serves approximately 63,200 residents in the 27.9-square-mile incorporated area of the town, including the University of Iowa main campus. It operates three fires stations, maintains a command vehicle and staffs three engine companies and one rescue/truck company. The department also collaborates with many other fire protection agencies at the local, state and federal levels.
