Horizons was created in 2005 by the merger of two long-standing human service providers in Eastern Iowa ; Alternative Services and Family Services. A vision to integrate horizontally, rather than vertically, has provided more life-enhancing services to a larger population. Many clients have required multiple services and by viewing each in a holistic manner, the new agency could better serve their emotional, physical, and mental needs or refer them through affiliations with other area agencies. Both of these Cedar Rapids based agencies have had exemplary reputations in the communities they served. Now the combination of the two non-profits offers high quality assistance to people who are struggling with difficult and complex issues. Horizons with its headquarters at 819 Fifth Street, SE, provides affordable mental health counseling for children and adults based on a sliding fee, consumer credit counseling to increase financial wellness, a survivor's support service for families affected by homicide and an on-site commercial kitchen which produces more than 200, 000 Meals on Wheels for the elderly and disabled in our community. Typically, many clients are unaware of the services that would be helpful to ease the chaos of daily life. Horizons was created to bridge the gap. Horizons is funded through federal, state and local grants, on-going development efforts and client fees. The non-profit is proud to receive funding through the United Way of East Central Iowa. Horizons employs 150 people with offices in Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Marshalltown, Iowa City, Anamosa and Monticello. Meals on Wheels sites include Cedar Rapids, Amana, Marengo, Victor, Belle Plaine and North English. Therapists, counselors, social workers, group home and kitchen staff make up the majority of our employment pool.
