The Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division (HSEMD) preserves human lives and reduces the impact of disasters. It plans for and responds to both natural and human-caused disasters. The division helps to coordinate activities before, during and after emergencies through partnerships with local, state, federal and private agencies. Located in Johnston, Iowa, the Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division also conducts training, planning and exercises for the public and private responders at the county and state levels. In addition, it undertakes damage assessments and requests federal assistance. The division, after the emergency is stabilized, organizes various state and federal programs to assist recovery for communities and individuals.
