John Winkler and his son Elmer Winkler founded Winkler in 1911. John and Elmer sold produce, poultry and eggs and made deliveries using horse-drawn wagons. In 1926, the company expanded into sugar, salt, wool and hides. In 1982, it added a frozen food and fresh meat facility. Winkler services more than 350 retail accounts in Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri.
