Keith E. McEwen, MD, is a native of Chicago, Illinois. He received his bachelor's degree in both psychology with distinction and zoology from Iowa State University. He obtained his medical doctorate from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. His general surgery residency was completed at Indiana University Medical School. Dr. McEwen is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of the American Medical Association, Indiana State Medical Association, Indianapolis Medical Society and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. McEwen has been performing outpatient LAP-BAND® System surgeries since June 2005. Dr. McEwen is credentialed with the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He began serving as an Allergan Proctor in 2007, educating other bariatric surgeons in procedures and techniques associated with lap band surgery and proper follow-up care of patients. Dr. McEwen decided in his adolescence that he would pursue medicine as his profession. While progressing through his medical education, surgery became his passion. During residency, laparoscopy had been introduced as a new and promising change in surgical technique. Dr. McEwen decided that he would strive to excel at laparoscopic technologies to aid patients with less invasive procedures, decreased post-operative pain and shorter recovery times. Dr. McEwen began private practice with Community Health Network in 1991. He created an outpatient program at Community Surgery Center Hamilton that is dedicated to non-resective gastric surgery. Since 2005, Dr. McEwen has successfully implanted 3,500 gastric band devices to aid in the reduction of obesity and co-morbid conditions. Additionally, he has skillfully conducted over 13,000 adjustments to the Lap Band System, ensuring optimal results for his patients. With a remarkable track record, Dr. McEwen has performed over 19,000 surgeries since 1991, encompassing both general and bariatric procedures. His expertise lies in interventional bariatrics, where he emphasizes less invasive techniques, complemented by a proficient bariatric team. Together, they provide comprehensive support to patients, facilitating necessary lifestyle changes for successful and sustainable outcomes. Dr. McEwen enjoys spending time with his two daughters. His hobbies include aviation, watching our Indiana Pacers and Colts, traveling and hiking, and participating in triathlons.
