The Fort Wayne Police Department, in partnership with the Fort Wayne, Ind., community, protects the life, property and personal liberties of all individuals. It provides Fort Wayne residents deterrence of criminal activity and an understanding of the diversity of cultures within the community. The department also offers fair and impartial enforcement of the law. The Fort Wayne Police Department is a full-service, highly sophisticated professional agency. It has an authorized strength of more than 400 sworn officers. The major organizational components of the department are a patrol uniform operations division, investigative support division and information services division. Each division is commanded by a deputy chief, except information services, which is headed by a civilian director. All division heads report to the assistant chief of police and the chief of police. The Fort Wayne Police Department was first organized in 1863 with eight officers.
