WTVO began operations in May 1953, under the original ownership of Harry and Elmer Balaban. WTVO was one of the first stations to air programming in Rockford, Ill. The station served Rockford as an NBC affiliate for more than 40 years before switching to an ABC affiliation. Mission Broadcasting purchased WTVO in November 2004. WTVO provides viewers with some of the most comprehensive local news coverage and serves the residents of the Illinois and Wisconsin state-line area. The station provides viewers with stereo sound and closed-captioning of the local news. WTVO is a member of the Rockford Area Chamber of Commerce, Rockford Area Economic Development Council and Television Bureau of Advertising. Headquartered in Rockford, the company is a branch of its parent company, Young Broadcastings, and employs nearly 75 people.
