History
St. Pius V Parish was founded by Jesuit priests from nearby Holy Family Parish in 1874 at the corner of Paulina and 18th Place. The current church building at Ashland and 19th was completed in 1893, just in time for the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. In 1925 the Dominicans took over pastoral responsibilities for the parish and continue to serve through the present day. The shrine of St. Jude was built in the church in 1929 and remains a popular place of prayer for faithful visitors. As the Pilsen neighborhood evolved into a predominantly Hispanic community during the 1960s, St. Pius V was one of the first to reach out and shape its parish activities and outreach around the new residents.
Specialties
St. Pius V Parish is a Catholic parish founded over 130 years ago, served by the Dominicans and located in the heart of the vibrant Pilsen neighborhood. The St. Pius V church family reflects our mainly Hispanic community and includes an award-winning elementary school and outreach to those in need. Our church family extends beyond Pilsen to many former residents who have moved to other parts of Chicago or the suburbs and come back to St. Pius V for Mass and other church activities.
