In 1864, St. Nicholas was established as the parish for all of the south Evanston area, which wasn't known by the name Evanston at the time. The current church was built beginning in 1904 and was finished two years later. St. Nicholas is attached to Pope John Paul XXIII School, which is located on the same property as the church, just a bit east on Washington Street. New Horizons Youth Group is held at the church on Sunday nights, from 7:30pm - 9:30pm. The church is led by Pastor William Tkachuk.
