History
Sitka Salmon Shares grew from the work of a few Midwesterners transplanted to Sitka, Alaska, to promote the health of wild salmon habitat and the continued strength of the sustainable fishery. There we built relationships with conservationists and fishermen. When sharing some of the high quality salmon caught by small boat fishermen (who see themselves as near artisans in the time and care they give to each fish) with friends back in the Midwest, we discovered that the quality and connections we cherished in Sitka were not really available in the Midwest. So, we launched Sitka Salmon Shares to build connections between small-boat, low-impact family fishers in Southeast Alaska with consumers in the Midwest. Inspired by the Community Supported Agriculture model of many small Midwestern farms, we wanted to translate the greatness of farm-to-fork to boat-to-table. Since then we have worked with fishermen, processors, conservationists, and consumers to build a better seafood system.
