The Iroquois call it The Great Law, and it reads that, "In every deliberation we must consider the impact on the seventh generation." That's the guiding principle behind this Oak Park non-profit, which makes the teaching of environmental sustainability its core mission.
Educational programs and classes offered by Seven Generations Ahead vary. Some include, a "Zero Waste" initiative for area school districts, and a "Fresh From the Farm" program, in which kids visit local organic farms, taste farm fresh fruits and vegetables in their classroom and watch chefs prepare simple, healthy meals.
The group, which was established as a non-profit in 2001, also serves as an "extended sustainability department" to local governments looking to implement socially responsible practices.
